"Growth is not by mere chance; it is the result of forces working together."

Growth is not by mere chance; it is the result of forces working together.

Ping Quach (AFX, Dream Team) created the dance organization .PNG in 2017 with this core idea in mind.

Driven with a mission of bringing creative communities together, .PNG actually made its debut in a World of Dance Chicago 2017 performance entitled Mercy.PNG, which offered a window into the realities of anxiety and larger mental health issues. Individuals from different backgrounds contributed to the set including dancers representing Urban Movement, Common Ground, Refresh Dance Crew, FIA Modern, CODA, Puzzle Dynasty, Unity, Daily Center, and Dream Team. The process of building the set was just as amazing as the set itself, and brought to life that mission of bringing people together. The opener was a spoken word piece performed by Allen Tusic Tu out of Chicago. Promotional artwork and the Mercy.PNG's shirts were designed by Ben Dungca out in California (shoutout to Ben #TeamEnten #Refresh #GoodProject). The music? Mixed none other than Sbu from Dream Team. And of course - each section of the piece was shaped by different choreographers which all flowed into a singular story. Being a part of this unique microcosm of dancers (check out these beautiful people below) definitely ranks top 5 in my own favorite dance experiences. 😉

But as you may know, performances are only one part of the .PNG family. .PNG was created as a kind of parent umbrella organization, with different initiatives all sharing that same spirit of collaboration and connection among dancers. Most notably, Ping and the .PNG family has been hard at work creating opportunities for dancers here in Chicago and the greater dance community. Last December, .PNG launched the first edition of Intensive.PNG, a day-long workshop that featured California-based dancers Archie Saquilabon (GRV), Dezi del Rosario (220), Jason Rillera (The Company), Markus pe Benito (Academy of Villains) and Tosh Tran (Academy of Villains).

The Intensive.PNG Dance Camp featured more than just 4 choreography classes. Markus and Tosh led an additional workshop that focused on exploratory movement, and each of the choreographers had the opportunity to share their own journeys in dance. How they got into dance. The struggles they were currently dealing with. Advice for dancers at any point in their dance career.

Being able to hear their stories was personally my favorite part of the Intensive.PNG experience. I feel like sometimes we can fall into this mindset of putting artists we admire on pedestals. We see the videos on YouTube or we see the competition videos and we think, "wow - I'll never be that good." But then you hear Archie reflect on how he didn't make the cut for GRV the first time he tried out (my reaction: 😱), or about struggles that the featured choreographers are dealing with now - maybe with school or work - and you realize that we're all cut from the same cloth, which is really liberating.

That's what .PNG is really all about. The kind of growth and development that can only come from sharing the floor with others. That kind of intentional Passion that Nurtures Growth.

Growth is not by mere chance; it is the result of forces working together.

Intensive.PNG_Ver2 adds 2.0 and Sbu representing the Dream Team in a series of fundamental workshops!

I keep thinking about that motto. As the .PNG team is looking to bring back the Intensive.PNG experience a second time, I believe this concept of forces working together has never rung truer than now. The second iteration of Intensive.PNG (stylized Intensive.PNG_Ver2) is a collaboration project between .PNG and the Dream Team! 🙌🙌🙌

The Dream Team has been making big moves in their own right, from hosting workshops at Supreme Dance Studio, preparing to represent Chicago in Boston at the Elements Dance Competition (more on that later), and performing at a variety of shows in the Chicago area this season. With such a full plate, you'd think that the Dream Team wouldn't have much space to do anything else. Guess the team stays hungry, man. It was such a cool moment to hear that the Dream Team would support Intensive.PNG_Ver2 as a collaborative partner. Dream Team's very own 2.0 and Sbu will be leading hip-hop fundamental workshops at the intensive!

As someone who is a part of both .PNG and Dream Team, I know I'm biased...but you absolutely absolutely have to experience Intensive.PNG. With 5 choreography classes, 2 fundamental workshops, an exploratory movement session, and the opportunity to hear about the journeys of the featured choreographers, Intensive.PNG_Ver2 is looking to be even more expansive than the first one. Peep the flyer for registration information and more! 😁

The second Intensive.PNG is set for March 17, and features a whole list of amazing movers representing The Company, Choreo Cookies, 220, Young Lions, and the Dream Team! You don't want to miss out on this super affordable experience. Register here !

I'm so excited to launch the next two posts, and I can't wait for myself to hurry up and finish them already. As we all countdown the days until the event, I'm excited to present some upcoming features on Dream Team co-founder Viet Phan, as well as PNG founder Ping Quach. I'm hoping that Chicago Dynamic can offer a little more insight into the visions of both organizations as they hustle hard this next month! ⬛
