Whew! Looks like this little project is finally off the ground! 😄
First things first – the very fact that you’re here on this website is super dope. Like for real. Undertaking this project has been an exciting and personal journey for me so far, but having dancers, artists, and creators like you taking a peep at this page means a lot. So thank you thank you thank you times a million! I hope that you enjoy the content I put up here over the next few months as much as I enjoy putting it together.
So quick introductions. John "JimLim" Lim here. That's me on the right. Since 2011, I've had the joy of dancing with some amazing groups in Chicago's dance community, including Unity, Reversion Crew (RIP 😂), and the team that began it all for me, PhiNix Dance Crew at the University of Chicago. Currently having the time of my life dancing with my brothers on The Dream Team.
More importantly, I want to welcome you to this project, Chicago Dynamic. The idea behind this project started from a desire for me to learn from and showcase people who inspire me in our dance and larger creative communities. Despite dancing for a hot minuteee, I'm still very much a newbie in understanding all the stories and history behind the community I'm in. There’s so much talent among us, and Chicago Dynamic gives me an opportunity to be able to hear everyone’s journeys through dance.
As dancers, we move through movement and are moved by movement. We speak without words. Yet, so much happens before an audience experiences a 5-minute set. Not only long hours of practice and creating by choreographers and dancers, but also the journeys of dancers themselves. Why they started dancing in the first place. What inspired them to create. Their struggles. Their strengths. The intent that each dancer goes through inside and outside of dance. As dancers and creatives, we are often influenced by many things and many people. Not least of all, as individuals, we often influence each other.
As a writer, I wish to put into words a lot of that which we typically don't. To ask questions I’ve always wanted to ask my favorite dancers and movers; maybe some of the same questions you’ve been wanting to ask too!
I named this page Chicago Dynamic because I love the idea that as humans and creatives we are always changing. (Also because you know, this domain name was the one that was available. 😅) We make mistakes, we learn, and we grow. Some of us drift out of dance, some are just starting, and still others are revisiting dance for the first time in a while. Chicago is a diverse city, with diverse styles and diverse people, and it’d be a waste for us not to learn more and learn from each other!
At the end of the day, I am excited by all the people and voices I’ll get to learn from for however long this project lasts. I’ll be happy even if I’m the only one reading my stuff. But – if you do decide to read along, I welcome you fully and encourage you to reach out with any comments or suggestions on how I can make this project even better for our community. Here we go!
